Morocco Tours from Fes: Sahara Desert, Chefchaouen & Imperial Cities

Morocco Tours from Fes offer an excellent way to discover Morocco’s historic cities, mountain landscapes and Sahara Desert. Fes sits in northern Morocco and provides convenient access to several major destinations.

The city itself deserves time before beginning a longer journey. Its historic medina, traditional crafts and distinctive architecture create a rich introduction to Moroccan culture.

Beyond Fes, travellers can explore Meknes and Volubilis, travel north to Chefchaouen or head south toward the Middle Atlas and Merzouga.

The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes Fes as an imperial city with a long multicultural history. Its official guide highlights the medina, Bab Boujloud, leather tanneries, Nejjarine Museum and other local attractions.

For travellers with more time, Fes also works as a starting point for longer Morocco journeys. Morocco Best Life Tours currently features an 11-day tour from Fes to Marrakech among its published itineraries.

Why Choose Morocco Tours from Fes?

Fes occupies a useful position for exploring northern and southeastern Morocco. As a result, one itinerary can combine historic cities, mountain scenery and desert landscapes.

Meknes lies close to Fes, making it easy to include on a cultural itinerary. The ancient Roman site of Volubilis adds another important historical dimension.

Heading north, Chefchaouen offers a completely different atmosphere. Its mountain setting and blue-painted streets provide a memorable contrast with Fes.

South of Fes, the landscape gradually changes as the route approaches the Middle Atlas. Travellers can continue toward Midelt, the Ziz Valley and eventually Merzouga.

Therefore, Morocco Tours from Fes can suit both short cultural trips and longer cross-country adventures.

Discover Fes Before Your Morocco Tour

Fes is more than a departure point. It is one of Morocco’s most important cultural destinations.

UNESCO inscribed the Medina of Fez on the World Heritage List in 1981. UNESCO describes the historic city as an important example of Moroccan urban culture, with architecture and traditions developed over many centuries.

The medina contains narrow streets, traditional workshops, historic buildings and markets. The Moroccan National Tourist Office also highlights attractions such as Bab Boujloud, the leather tanneries, the Tombs of the Merinids and the Nejjarine Museum.

Morocco Tours from Fes Start with Culture

Allow at least some time to explore Fes before leaving for another destination. A guided medina visit can help travellers understand the city’s history, architecture and traditional crafts.

The medina is also a living part of the city. Craftspeople continue working in traditional trades, while markets remain part of everyday life.

Food provides another way to experience Fes. Local specialities and traditional Moroccan cuisine can add an important cultural element to a city stay.

Consequently, starting a longer journey after experiencing Fes can make the overall trip feel more connected.

Morocco Tours from Fes to Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is one of the most popular destinations to combine with Fes. The city sits in the Rif Mountains and is known for its distinctive blue-painted streets.

The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes Chefchaouen as a mountain destination with a distinctive medina and kasbah.

A journey from Fes to Chefchaouen can work as a day trip or as part of a longer northern Morocco itinerary.

Travellers can spend time walking through the medina, visiting viewpoints and exploring the surrounding area. The slower pace also creates a contrast with the busy streets of Fes.

For photographers and travellers interested in architecture, the combination offers plenty of visual variety.

Fes, Chefchaouen and Northern Morocco

A longer northern itinerary can extend beyond Chefchaouen. Depending on the route, travellers can include Meknes, Rabat, Tangier or other destinations.

The official Moroccan tourism portal lists Chefchaouen, Fes, Meknes, Rabat and Tangier among Morocco’s northern and cultural destinations.

This makes northern Morocco particularly suitable for travellers who prefer cities, heritage and mountain landscapes.

Furthermore, a northern itinerary can be combined with a later journey toward the Sahara.

Morocco Tours from Fes to Meknes and Volubilis

Meknes is one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities. The Moroccan National Tourist Office identifies Rabat, Fes, Meknes and Marrakech as the country’s four Imperial Cities.

Meknes is also close to Fes. The official tourism site lists the distance between the two cities at approximately 64 kilometres.

That makes Meknes a practical addition to a Fes-based itinerary.

Nearby Volubilis offers a different experience. The archaeological site preserves Roman-era remains and is among Morocco’s UNESCO World Heritage properties.

A combined Fes, Meknes and Volubilis itinerary therefore brings together several periods of Moroccan history.

For travellers interested in architecture and archaeology, this route can provide a strong cultural focus without requiring a long-distance journey.

Morocco Tours from Fes to the Sahara Desert

The Sahara is one of the main reasons travellers choose a longer journey from Fes.

The route south crosses the Middle Atlas before continuing toward Midelt and the eastern desert regions. Morocco’s official tourism portal describes the Errachidia-Midelt-Merzouga area as a transition between the Atlas Mountains and desert landscapes.

The scenery changes considerably during the journey. Green and mountainous landscapes gradually give way to rocky plateaus, valleys and desert environments.

Merzouga provides access to the Erg Chebbi dunes. Here, travellers can experience the desert landscape and spend time around the dunes.

A multi-day route also provides opportunities to stop along the way. That can make the journey more enjoyable than treating the desert simply as a final destination.

Morocco Tours from Fes to Merzouga

Merzouga is a natural focus for travellers interested in a Sahara experience.

Depending on the itinerary, a desert journey can include time around Erg Chebbi, a camel excursion and an overnight desert camp. Exact inclusions vary, so travellers should always check the selected tour before booking.

The journey from Fes also offers a valuable geographical transition. Travellers move from the historic north through mountain scenery before reaching the desert.

For this reason, Morocco Tours from Fes to Merzouga are about the entire route, not only the final desert stop.

An additional night can provide more time to enjoy the desert without immediately continuing to another long-distance destination.

Explore the Middle Atlas from Fes

The Middle Atlas provides a natural counterpoint to Morocco’s historic cities.

The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes the area around Fes as overlooking the Saïss plain and the Middle Atlas mountains. It also highlights forests and lakes around the region.

Ifrane is one of the best-known destinations in this area. The city is surrounded by mountain scenery and provides a very different setting from Fes.

A mountain excursion can therefore add variety to a Fes itinerary. Travellers who enjoy nature can combine city exploration with forests, lakes and mountain landscapes.

Moreover, the Middle Atlas forms part of the route toward the desert. Consequently, it can be incorporated into a longer Fes-to-Merzouga journey rather than visited separately.

Morocco Tours from Fes to Marrakech

Marrakech is another major destination that can be reached as part of a longer journey from Fes.

The two cities offer distinct cultural environments. Fes is strongly associated with its historic medina and traditional crafts, while Marrakech combines its own historic medina with landmarks, gardens and the famous Jemaa el-Fna square. UNESCO recognizes the Medina of Marrakesh as a World Heritage property.

A Fes-to-Marrakech itinerary can travel through several regions of Morocco. Depending on the route, travellers can include the Sahara, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate or other southern destinations.

Morocco Best Life Tours currently lists an 11-day Fes to Marrakech tour, providing a longer format for travellers who want to experience several Moroccan regions.

This type of itinerary can be particularly useful for visitors who arrive in northern Morocco and depart from Marrakech.

Cultural Experiences on Morocco Tours from Fes

Culture remains one of the strongest reasons to begin a Moroccan journey in Fes.

The city’s medina preserves a historic urban environment where architecture, crafts and everyday activities continue to intersect. UNESCO emphasizes the continuity of traditional knowledge and cultural practices within the historic city.

Traditional crafts are especially visible around the medina. Leatherwork, metalwork, pottery and other crafts form part of Fes’s cultural identity.

Food also creates an important connection with local culture. A stay in Fes provides an opportunity to experience Moroccan cuisine before continuing toward other regions.

Furthermore, travelling beyond Fes allows visitors to see how landscapes and local traditions change from one region to another.

Choosing the Right Morocco Tours from Fes

The ideal itinerary depends on your available time and interests. Some travellers want a short cultural experience, while others want to cross Morocco from north to south.

Short Morocco Tours from Fes

Short trips can focus on nearby destinations.

Meknes and Volubilis are natural choices for history-focused travellers. Chefchaouen offers a different option for visitors interested in mountain scenery and architecture.

A Middle Atlas excursion can also work well for travellers who prefer nature.

These shorter journeys allow visitors to return to Fes rather than changing accommodation every night.

Morocco Tours from Fes for Three to Five Days

Three to five days provide more flexibility.

A multi-day itinerary can combine Fes with Chefchaouen and Meknes. Alternatively, travellers can begin heading south toward the desert.

A Fes-to-Merzouga itinerary requires enough time for the journey. Therefore, travellers should avoid choosing an itinerary solely by counting destinations.

Consider the amount of time spent travelling between stops. A balanced schedule can leave more time for sightseeing and local experiences.

Longer Morocco Tours from Fes

Longer trips offer the greatest variety.

Travellers can combine Fes, Chefchaouen, the Middle Atlas, Merzouga, the Dades Valley, Ait Ben Haddou and Marrakech.

The official Moroccan tourism portal also promotes a “Great Tour of Morocco” concept covering destinations from north to south.

Morocco Best Life Tours’ current Fes-to-Marrakech offering demonstrates how a longer itinerary can connect different regions.

Longer travel also provides greater flexibility. You can spend additional time in destinations that interest you instead of rushing through every stop.

What to Consider Before Booking

Before choosing Morocco Tours from Fes, review the complete itinerary.

Check the number of nights, accommodation, transportation, meals and included activities. These details can differ significantly between tour packages.

Travel distances also matter. A route to Merzouga involves substantially more road travel than an excursion to Meknes or Chefchaouen.

Next, consider your preferred pace. Some travellers enjoy a full schedule, while others prefer longer stays in fewer places.

Private tours can provide greater flexibility when your priorities differ from a standard itinerary. Morocco Best Life Tours promotes personalized travel experiences and currently lists private and multi-day tours from Fes.

Finally, communicate your preferences before booking. Mention your travel dates, preferred destinations and activities so the itinerary can match your plans.

Practical Tips for Morocco Tours from Fes

Pack according to the season and route. Mountain areas can feel cooler than Fes, while desert conditions can vary substantially between day and night.

Comfortable walking shoes are particularly useful in the medina. Many historic streets are narrow, uneven and designed primarily for pedestrians.

Sun protection is also useful during outdoor excursions. A hat, sunscreen and suitable clothing can make sightseeing more comfortable.

Allow sufficient time for long journeys. Morocco covers a large area, and travelling from Fes to the Sahara takes considerably longer than visiting nearby destinations.

Respect local customs when visiting communities and historic sites. Ask before photographing people, particularly during personal or commercial activities.

Above all, choose an itinerary that matches your travel pace. A well-balanced journey can provide time for both major attractions and spontaneous discoveries.

Why Choose Morocco Best Life Tours?

Morocco Best Life Tours specializes in personalized Morocco travel experiences, including desert tours, cultural journeys and multi-day itineraries. The company’s current website features an 11-day tour from Fes to Marrakech among its Morocco tours.

Starting from Fes also allows travellers to build a route around their own priorities. You can focus on heritage, northern Morocco, the Middle Atlas, the Sahara or a combination.

For a shorter trip, nearby destinations can create a compact itinerary. For a longer holiday, Fes can become the first stage of a journey across Morocco.

The company can also be considered for travellers looking for a personalized itinerary rather than a fixed route.

A Grand Moroccan Adventure We had an absolutely wonderful trip in Morocco with Morocco Best Life Tours. From the very first email that I received from Rachid, the manager, I knew that I was dealing with someone who was committed to ensuring that we had a grand adventure. We travelled many, many miles with our private driver. Rachid was in contact with our driver daily to ensure that all of our needs were being looked after. We chose to book our own accommodations, however, we could have let Rachid handle all of our accommodation bookings. Our driver was very reliable and was literally available to take us wherever we wanted to go. I would not hesitate to book another trip with Morocco Best Life Tours.

An Unforgettable 3-Day Sahara Experience with an Amazing Team We had an amazing 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga Sahara and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the very beginning, Rashid, the owner, was in constant communication with us. He was always available, responsive, and ready to find immediate solutions whenever something came up, in close coordination with our driver. This gave us a great sense of trust and organization throughout the trip. Our driver, Abu, was exceptional. Despite his young age, he is a very experienced and confident driver, always calm, professional, and extremely discreet. He made us feel safe on long drives, respected our pace, and was genuinely kind and helpful. We shared conversations, laughs, and great moments along the way, which made the journey even more special. The landscapes, the desert experience, and the overall flow of the trip were unforgettable. Everything felt well-planned but still flexible and authentic. Thank you very much for everything, Rashid and Abu. We truly appreciated the experience and hope to meet again in the future!

Marokko a la carte We had a wonderful time and an excellent tour with Rachid, the guide and a good friend of mine. He took us from Fes to the desert Merzourga and to Marrakech. We visited a ceramics factory and saw beautiful places like the Dades valley, Toudra gorges, Ait Benhaddou and many more. Rachid told us about the variety of fruit, trees and vegetable in Morocco. He‘s a very good driver and booked lovely places to stay and to eat. Also we had a camel ride in the desert, where we stayed in a luxury camp. Whenever we needed a driver in Marrakesh, Rachid organised this for us. I warmly recommend Rachid and his team for any tour you want to take in Morocco. You will feel very good with him.

Simply stunning: camels, gorges, valleys, mountains & of course the Merzouga Desert. So good. Amazing experience from start to finish. We did so much: visited gorges, traversed the countryside, hiked through villages, dipped toes in cold mountain streams, drank spring water, stopped at ancient Kaspah’s, To break up our journey, we stayed midway at an auberge. It was a lovely experience. I made friends with the people I shared a room with. There was music and dancing at night. A good supper and a lovely breakfast. Welcomed with tea & biscuits by a carpet making family and then of course the desert! It was incredible. The scenery: stunning. We traveled by camel and then 4x4 to get to our camp. Such an experience. In the evening we played in the sand dunes, watched the sun set, had supper & a campfire with music and dancing and then climbed up the sanding to stargaze. Magical. I made so many friends on this trip. I loved being on the tour bus. So much fun; good music and the best driver. I thoroughly recommend this trip - you’ll love it!
